Creating a Web Page to Help Scouts with a Merit Badge

The job of earning a merit badge requires a Scout to use his resources to learn about the subject and complete the merit badge. One of the best ways to encourage a boy to work on his requirements is to provide some good resources right up front. A number of folks on the web are doing this by creating pages dedicated to helping Scouts complete one or two specific merit badges. Some examples are included within the text below.

Here is an outline that can help you create a web page dedicated to a specific merit badge:

  1. Choose a merit badge. This is probably the most important step. You should have good knowledge of the subject matter and knowledge of available resources on the internet or access to other resources.
  2. Get a copy of the merit badge requirements and review them so you'll know what kind of information the Scout needs.
  3. Create a dedicated page on your web site. The page should be specifically for this purpose and should have very little else on it to avoid confusion. The page should contain the merit badge requirements and material that can help the Scout earn the badge. These materials can include:
    1. links that are specific to each requirement
      bullet(eg Space Exploration Merit Badge)
    2. written text and data specifically about the merit badges requirements
      bullet(eg Computers Merit Badge)
    3. references to books or other web sites that provide information that can help the Scout
      bullet(eg Astronomy Merit Badge)
    4. or any combination of the above.

There are currently 118 merit badges. They provide Boy Scouts with topics to learn about ranging from Citizenship and Golf to Disabilities Awareness and Veterinary Medicine. While most merit badges are about subjects Scouts really want to learn about, many boys still need encouragement to get them started. Please join us in providing that encouragement.

If you want to see more examples of web pages dedicated to helping Scouts earn merit badges, look immediately underneath the name of each merit badge on our Merit Badge Resource Links page. Only around 15% of the merit badges have dedicated pages but the percentage is growing.
