Merit Badge Outline For

Horsemanship

Introduction	Your challenge as a summer camp merit badge counselor is to see that the Scouts who attend your session have the best opportunity to learn about horsemanship. It is important that they have a positive experience. This lesson plan is designed to help you plan a logical, high-quality program. Sign off on the requirements as the Scouts complete them.
Resources	Be sure to utilize all the resources available to you. There are many riding clubs who have people to assist you with your instruction.


DAY	ACTIVITY		DESCRIPTION

1	Greet Scouts	A.	Examine all merit badge cards for the Scoutmaster's signature. Make a roster of the Scouts.
	Review	B.	Review requirements 1 and 2 with Scouts.
	Demonstrate	C.	Review requirement 8 and demonstrate how to lead the horse.

2	Demonstrate	A.	Demonstrate how to care for the saddle and bridle and name the parts of both (requirement 3).
	Demonstrate	B.	Demonstrate requirement 4.
	Ride	C.	Begin work on requirements 9a-c.

3	Demonstrate	A.	Demonstrate requirement 10.
	Discuss/Demo	B.	Discuss and demonstrate requirement 7.
	Ride	C.	Continue work on requirements 9c-g.

4	Work	A.	Discuss requirement 5.
	Ride	B.	Continue work on requirements 9g-j.
	Note	C.	This is the time to make sure all the Scouts are proceeding on schedule. If it looks like anyone is having a problem in completing the merit badge, the Scoutmaster should be notified.

5	Wrap up	A.	Wrap up all the requirements. Have Scouts finish any riding needed to complete requirement 8.
		B.	Prepare the merit badge cards for the proper signatures. If any Scout does not complete all the requirements, make sure that his records properly indicate the requirements that he has completed and that the Scout knows why he did not complete the badge requirements.
		C.	Submit necessary records to the camp program director.
